How Mikeera decides
Mikeera isn't a list of allowed foods. It works out what something is made of, checks each component against curated rules drawn from health authorities, and shows you what is driving the answer.
What the ratings mean
- Generally safe
Generally considered low risk or compatible in normal amounts. Not a promise that it is completely safe for you.
- Caution
It depends — on the amount, the preparation, the trimester, or the rest of the label. The result tells you what to check.
- Not recommended
Not generally recommended, because authoritative guidance points to real risk or the risk is avoidable.
- Insufficient evidence
There isn't enough good evidence to say. Mikeera says so rather than guessing in either direction.
Mikeera never says anything is “100% safe”, and never turns “no evidence of harm” into “proven safe”. Generally considered safe means the balance of evidence is reassuring — nothing more.
How the evidence is graded
- Strong evidence — consistent findings across large, good-quality studies.
- Moderate evidence — reasonable evidence, with some gaps.
- Limited evidence — few studies, small studies, or mostly indirect evidence.
- Conflicting evidence — credible sources disagree, so the answer is cautious.
- Insufficient evidence — not enough to draw a conclusion in either direction.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are separate
The same item can be fine while breastfeeding and not recommended in pregnancy, or the other way round. Every result rates both, side by side, so you never have to guess which one an answer applies to.
Food is judged by components, not names
A dish isn't safe or unsafe by its name. Mikeera looks at what's inside and how it was prepared — pasteurised or not, cooked through or not, how it was stored and handled — because that's what actually changes the answer.

- NHS
- CDC
- ACOG
- MotherToBaby
- LactMed (NIH)
- Peer-reviewed research
- Manufacturer labelling
When an item isn't in the reviewed knowledge base yet, Mikeera assesses it against these same rules and labels the result as AI-assisted so you know it hasn't been hand-reviewed.
